A real treat.....

Yesterday evening a girl friend and i were kindly invited to view this amazing garden; just down the road from where we live. The owners have developed this garden in the past 8 years into a living piece of art where you can loose yourself in amongst the beauty that exists around every corner. The front garden was designed from inspiration derived from many European gardens visited by the owners on there last trip overseas.
The gorgeous potting shed sits proudly at the top of the potager where mass plantings of vegetables and cutting flowers are grandly displayed in various structured beds. You will see the owners are extremely clever at positioning various vintage finds around the garden to only better enhance the already beautiful design.
The rusty rooster sits magically on top of the fence post; you expect him to come to life.
And lastly but certainly not least the chook shed that the husband built out of recycled materials. Every bit enchanting , as it is practical.....at this stage no chooks. We will have to see what we can do.
And so there we have it ; an inspirational evening where we returned to our home totally inspired and proud of what our neighbours have accomplished in such a short time. Not a moment was there lack of conversation about this amazing garden well into our evening with a glass of wine in hand. Congratulations to our friends and neighbours.xxxxxxx

As things are nearing the decorating stage at our new home, i am madly going through my files for more inspiration. I guess you just want to make the right choices; and choices that also suit your lifestyle. Do you go for polished wooden floors like in the photo above or do you have lime washed flooring.....this will all depend on wall colour, bench tops, colour of cabinets etc etc.
Love the ladder for displaying my linen tea towels.

The fresh smell of freshly picked blooms always makes a house homely......

Sorry for my lack of posts lately....but i have been away on our summer break. I must say we have had an amazing time.We went on our boat to Maria Island, between Christmas and New Year, then a week painting in at our new home, and then finally a week on the East coast of Tasmania. The weather was great and the fishing was good; so both very relaxed and ready for what the New Year brings us. Here are some shots of The Vintage Rose now i am back at work, ordering new stock and having a change around. The bags in the above photo are new in store selling for $29.

I just wanted everyone to know that my clever daughter, Amy won a photographic award at her college last week. We all went along to the college exhibition and Amy was given an award for her photographic work . Very proud parents, as there was so much amazing work. She had concentrated on portrait shots, and the photo above was one she had on display.

As you are all probably aware Christmas is nearly upon us; and we are all now madly wondering what we are going to decorate our homes with . What wreath to hang on the front door, what to decorate the tables with and how to decorate the tree . Its also a time when people arrive back home for a visit and a great time for catching up with lots of friends. I must say the thought of catching up with family and friends is the part about Christmas that i love the most.
Maybe a wreath like this one would do the trick....
This is absolutely gorgeous and would make anyone feel Christmas is here!

Hi everyone....between setting up for Christmas , selling our home, renovating, our daughter arrived home today. I don't care if i go empty handed this year; just having her home is enough. I thought i would share some photos of the store decorated for Christmas....i hope you enjoy.

As some of you may know we are flat out with the restoration of our new (old) home and i am constantly going through my files for ideas and inspiration; so i thought i would share some of them with you.
Love this kitchen for its rustic beauty.
What a great size island for working and entertaining around; i am afraid i will not have the room.....a galley kitchen for me.
This picnic getaway could be on the cards....feeling like i need a break.
Maybe even a French holiday stay....not likely. But guess what, everyone is entitled to dream!

These are our new little birds on balls; nice for decoration inside or out of the home.
Birdcages are great for inside or outside as well....these would look lovely on or hanging over an outside table with lots of candles in them.
Our wooden pears......much lighter than the marble ones.
The recycled elm coffee table and benches are new to the store.

I think pots and greenery always add an element of freshness, and is nice when the doors are opened to see them there. With the new renovations going on i am considering what type of pots to put where.
This bedroom is so airy and light; gorgeous.
Love the single pendant lights hanging down over the bench tops.
Bathrooms are very much on my mind as choosing the right bath for the space and tap ware has all been finalised and are on their way............these pictures have very much influenced my decisions.
Love this contemporary sofa, especially with the vintage dress forms and apple pickers ladder in the background.

Linen and black are definitely on the cards for the renovation.
This bath is almost identical to the one installing in the upstairs bathroom; hopefully its on its way. We have also chosen taps that stand on legs and come up from the floor.
We are also having shutters in a few windows of the house.....love these....Take care x

The kitchen cupboards are all timber with a cream paint finish; the bench tops are pine.
One of the upstairs bedrooms....
Our lounge room with stone flags on the floor. The ceiling is vaulted so when the heat rises it circulates and tunnels through the whole house.

Seeing our home is soon to go on the open market i thought i would share some photos with you. This photo is looking from the dining room into the kitchen and scullery which has an underground cellar.
This shot is from the kitchen looking into the hallway. The staircase is all recycled blackwood.
This shot from down in the valley looks at the Eastern side of the house. The bricks on the outside are all recycled old bricks that have been washed in a lime paint. The garden is surrounded by a drystone wall. All the gates are made from recycled hardwood.
An early morning shot looking through into our bush; i love this shot and will miss these mornings here.

One of the decisions i have to make soon in renovating our period home is what type of shelving and storage am i going to have. These pictures have inspired a few ideas....see what you all think.

This is my motto at the moment "Keep calm and carry on" , something that you definitely need to do when renovating an old home. I will explain more later ; but all i can say is that we have opened a can of worms. Anyway ....keep calm and carry on. What more can we do...!
The somewhat nicer side to restoration work is deciding on what fixtures and fittings you would like to introduce to your design. These taps in the above photo are similar to the ones we will be using in our upstairs bathroom.
Bench tops and cupboard profiles is another major decision to making the kitchen both functional and looking great.
I quite like the simplicity of these cupboards, and will certainly be going with a similar painted finish. One thing i have discovered with making decisions; it pends greatly on availability. Because everything happens in a sequence if the product is not available at the right time, this greatly changes your decision making at the time.
These lights (which are available at our store ) will look great over our dining table. The rest of the house is proving to be quite a challenge. Any suggestions would be great. For the flooring in our kitchen dining area we are thinking of using recycled oak and then lime washing over the top , for a fresh open look to the somewhat small narrow room. Don't worry i will show photos when i can. Take care.

Things have been rather hectic; renovating our new home, getting ready to put our home on the market next week and managing the store and family life. Oh well you just get on and do what is possible for you. I thought i better show you some new items that have been coming through from my last buying trip. These gorgeous paper weights in the above photo.
These lovely no 11 cushions; even would look great at the beach or in any young boys bedroom.
These handy letter holders; great for any busy family or business. Would even look great with a display of handmade cards.
Rattan place mats or potholder for the centre of any table.

Today i left my camera at the new house; so i had to show you these from the files of things i love. These long set of drawers are fabulous and i would love them in my workroom for fabric storage. Oh well, i guess you can dream.
Grain sacks covering chairs is another love of mine; this one is absolutely gorgeous.
Butlers sinks....hopefully mine will look like this.
Greenery ....wreaths on doors especially at Christmas time.

With the first day of spring all these ideas come into mind.....decorating, gardening, outdoor entertaining . I love spring. With lots to do this month i am looking for decorating ideas for the new house and was taken with the photo above, tell me what you think.
I am certainly one for the outdoors which includes eating outdoors.
Picking a fresh bunch of flowers and bringing them indoors.
Getting washing on the line; sounds great to me.....

As the days roll on stock is now arriving from my buying trip. New candlesticks, demijohns of all sizes, more marble pears, jugs and lots of plates, bowls and various other dinnerware, linen, and a gorgeous rustic console table. We have also received soaps, room sprays, linen water and cleaning products from France.
These marble dishes are now back in store....small and large sizes.

Finally horn bangles are in from Africa.

In the past few weeks i have been gardening madly in preparation for putting our home on the market. Its safe to say with the two moves which we have made in our lives, leaving the garden is probably just as hard as leaving the home. Its a haven where you can think; loose yourself and be completely at one with your surroundings. The light this morning was gorgeous so i couldn't resist taking these shots.

I love the way the beautiful old peppermints sit so beautifully in the background of this garden. It makes it look like an extension of the actual garden.

This is a lovely hellebore i planted last year...and is now doing really well. Sad times but many happy times in our new home with lots of planning and renovating to come. Dont worry i will keep you posted with lots of before and after shots.

More pieces of pottery to add to the range in store are on its way....more jugs, utility jars and large flower urns.
I am finding it increasingly challenging to maintain that point of difference within the store. Because there are so many lifestyle stores in Launceston now and we are all competing for stock it becomes difficult to find new and interesting things that no other store has. I will be receiving more antique pieces and i am excited about their arrival. I have also secured a new clothing range exclusive to Tasmania and The Vintage Rose ( more info about that latter).

After returning from a rather chaotic buying trip i am pleased to be back home and back in my store where i can work out the plans i have for the next consecutive months. We will be introducing some interesting new lines along with some unique vintage one-off pieces. Its quite exciting with the prospect of whats arriving....so stayed tuned. I have posted some photos of some our new items..A funky cupboard with its original paint finish....

What will i be buying.....

When i go buying for the store i still try and seek out unusual items that add a point of difference to my store. This year i will be looking for many, many new items. The above photo shows miniature dress making forms which i have sold in store before; and they were a great hit for displaying your jewellery on.
Cushions, baskets for storage, quilts for throws or going on the end of your bed, and glassware are always great in store. And i guess, are still useful items that people are always looking for.
Decorating books are something i will be seeking out this year as they too always sell well in store.
These bottles i was hunting for last year; but decided against them.....maybe this year.
Beautiful jewellery will be something i will be placing emphasis on when buying for The Vintage Rose. Take care and i will let you know how it all goes....cant wait.

It never fails to delight when you are opening your supply of Cathy Penton charms. The way they are wrapped and the grand reveal is an experience within its self. There is something very spiritual and special about this lady and it certainly shows in her work. I feel very privileged to have them as apart of The Vintage Rose. Here are some just hot off the press and in store today......they wont last.

The large rectangular bevels are a feature piece all on their own.

I am off buying in the next few weeks not only to restock my store but also in preparation for Christmas trading. I have been looking at what themes i will be introducing at Christmas time and what colour combinations. It seems crazy thinking of Christmas at this time of year....but by the time it arrives in store its well into October. I am finding every year things are arriving later and later.

With Christmas comes a lot more outdoor entertaining and parties; therefore i will be looking for products that will enhance any outdoor setting.....trays, hurricane lamps, glasses, water jugs, etc.
And with the renovation of our new home not far away i will also be on the look out for various forms of lighting, curtains and other bits n pieces.....cant wait.

I feel like all i have been rambling on about is the new home and moving; so i thought for a change i would do a post on the store. The above shots are of the beautiful green glazed pottery. We have already sold quite a bit so i thought a window display was in order before it all sold.

Looking at kitchens and laundry

I love the classical lines of this kitchen and the practical stone-look floor.
As some of you know; we have just brought a Georgian town house and so many ideas and designs forms are running through my head. What style of kitchen will we have; what will fit with the confines of our spaces and last but not least, what will be practical and will not date.

I tend to lean towards classical styling with simple lines ; maintaining the same joinery throughout the entire house. So whatever joinery i use in the kitchen i will use the same profile in the bathrooms and laundry. So everything is uniform and flows throughout the home.
I love this style of kitchen the most....and also the chrome handles . An aga or Rayburn would be great, as i have cooked off one most of my married life but i don't think we will have the room.....never mind maybe next time. Take care.x

Looking for inspiration....

As we are taking over our new home at the end of August; i am flat out finding pictures from my files and tearing out pictures from magazines of ideas and things i would like for the home. I have already decided on exterior colours and how we will structure the garden. I am doing a mood board for both the exterior and interior which i will share with you once i have completed the looks. These photos today inspire me not just through the colours used but the rustic simplicity of design. I love the photo above for the choice of having lots of different forms of lighting, rather than them all matching. I don't think i would choose this for our home but i love it anyway.

I am so excited about doing our new home; and cant wait to start. Well in the mean time i have to settle with planning and organising everything before the big day when we take over. Hi there.....

You probably have been wondering where i have been.... well to be honest i have been busy organising the purchase of our new home. Yes that is right another house. It was totally unexpected so i am still a little shocked but very very happy with our decision. For quite sometime we have been looking for something a little smaller with not as much land. As the girls have become older and now one has moved out of home, we realise that we dont need the room we used to; our property is ideal for a family with children, animals, maybe even a pony. So we are moving into a different faze of our life and yes, another chapter will begin. And it will give me more excuses to post all our ideas and changes during the renovations . These are some sneak photos i took the other day for you to see. The bones are beautiful; built in 1840 with all original cedar doors, mantles etc. There are lots we need to do to put our stamp on it ....painting decorating and a few structural changes but all in all its very solid and livable. The photo above is looking from one upstairs bedroom into the other, displaying the beautiful early cedar doors and architraves.
And this wraps all around the entire room......love love love. I think its my favourite room in the house....girls can you possibly guess why.
Looking from the front lounge into the kitchen, dining area. As you can see it needs a few changes but all really structurally sound.
The exterior is beautiful but we will change the colours and the garden slightly but such a great aspect facing east.
Another photo of front elevation. I am currently trying to find out a little on its history....so stay tuned. The sad part about all this is that we will be putting our property on the market in spring. So busy times ahead and our trip has been put on hold till May. Oh well another chapter in our lives and more for me to post about. I will be showing you the progression of our renovations when we take possession. This cabinet in the above photos has an industrial cabinet very similar to one we have arriving soon. Imagine this in a bathroom with a large basin on in....great for storage underneath.

Yesterday we had a tremendous amount of rain and it snowed down to as low as the 200m level. It has been freezing and i must say i have had the fire raging in the store. Customers have loved it. I must say.....i have the best and most loyal customers in the world. Thank you each and every one of you....you are all so great. Whenever i am having a weak moment or feeling down in walks one of them with their pearls of wisdom or something up lifting to say. And i must say your timing is impeccable. They always manage to say the right things and exactly the right time. So a big big thank you from the bottom of my heart. After 5 years of being in business, i guess you get to know your customers quite well and in turn they get to know you. Sometimes the look on my face can tell a thousand stories, i am sure. The store is not just a store its an extension of me and my personality; which creates a feel, a mood and story of i guess my life. Thanks and take care......x

Just to let the visiting customers know that over the winter months of June, July and August we close early at 4.30pm. The glass cloches have been a huge hit; with only a few left in store..i think another order will be happening soon.
Our linens are a beautiful addition to any room in the house, draped over a bed, or as a throw or tablecloth....the uses are endless.
A useful addition to any pantry; a great storage option.

I am absolutely loving having my camera back; but i wont speak too soon as some of these shots are not the best. Anyway it gives you a bit of a sneak peak at a few new things that have drifted into store this week. The mason hurricanes are so cute for a small candle; candles and candle holders sell so much better in winter at The Vintage Rose, as we are spending more time indoors and it makes us feel maybe warm. I don't know, that's my theory anyway.
Some gorgeous string, lovely quality and colours.
Our gorgeous European style pottery.....big urns, jugs, bowls etc. Cant you imagine this sitting in some beautiful Georgian conservatory.
Some french cabbage coasters which sell for only $25 a set of 4.

Still receiving lots of stock in from the February trade show. More will be coming this week with some of the most interesting that i ordered at the fair. These lovely pottery crosses look great in any room of the house.

Sorry for my lack of posts lately; but my camera has been playing up. These are loaded off my i-phone. Not the quality but will have to do until i resolve the problem. Since i took these shots the clock in the window has sold, but i may get another. Ill wait and see.
These are our new burlap cushions with french scripting on them; selling very quickly.

Another window display. In the next week we are receiving the larger portion of our stock from the gift fair with some beautiful antique pieces thrown in as well. I think i have a fascination for anything monogrammed. When on our holiday in Belgium and France i will hunting down some monogrammed vintage linens as they are very difficult to find here. And if you do come across them they are extremely expensive.

Preparations for our trip....

Time is ticking on, and preparing for our trip, takes lots of organizing and juggling. Working out where to go first, and where to stay. As this is our first trip overseas together we want to get things right. Although we wont be spending a fortune on accommodation we want somewhere central in the towns we have selected ; so we can get a feel for the village atmosphere. The above chateau is truly magnificent but i cant see us staying anywhere quite so opulent.
I am getting quite excited about seeing some European fashion. I have followed fashion since i was a young teenager and find what people wear quite fascinating. The above styling comes from a gorgeous store which i hope to visit when i am there.

For the last couple of days i have been madly unpacking boxes and more boxes. We have some great new items that would make a lovely Easter gift for that special someone in your life. Around this time of year i find many of us start getting ready for a long winter by considering what improvements or changes can be made around the home. Winter we spend a lot of time indoors so a pleasant environment makes for a more comfortable and relaxing time over the colder months. Some lovely vintage canvas floor cushions with a great book to read (photo above ), would make a lovely addition to any lounge or living area.

Dreaming of France.

This year is the year. We are finally going on a trip of a life time, 5 weeks in France and Belgium. We had good intentions in heading off last year , just too busy and too much going on. However this year its a definite, and i am so so excited. I have not been out of the country since i was 21 years of age, and my husband hasn't been at all. So look out here we come. Today we are booking our flights and finalizing other details.
We will hire a little car and just drive. We are only stationing ourselves in about 4 regions and just soaking up the areas ; no rushing from one tourist destination to another.

We hope to explore the many french flea markets and visit many Antique shops.....maybe even find a treasure or two.
Another priority is to experience the cuisine and wine....another of our passions...

Simple tones, great texture....

These photos are a great example of simple colours with great textural contrast. The above photos displays a simple industrial feel without leaving you feeling cold. The use of rust brown tones in leather and metal help soften the coolness from the white concrete and white wash walls.

This photos with the layering of creams and off whites with the rattan to soften helps to give this bedroom some warmth.

The above two photos have been balanced with some greenery which also freshens the whole look.

We have just changed over from day light savings; so now our evenings are shorter. This morning i was up with the rooster crowing feeling like i had had a huge sleep in. Great for getting going and being productive. Out with the camera as the light was gorgeous, just like a lot of our early Autumn mornings. Crisp and still. The above photo was taken from over near our new dam, looking across towards the house.
I think i beat them out of bed....that would be a first.

This beautiful storage basket is great not only for those messy Cd's but also for any other bits and pieces. It would be great to carry out to the BBQ for napkins, cutlery and condiments.
These are our new hot chocolate mugs and latte mugs; each have their own individual mixing spoon.
The handmade brass handle scissors would last a life time.
The antique dough bins.....great for anything.....even rolled up towels in a bathroom.

Sorry it has taken so long to post you some photos of new stock. Some went walk about and now has been found only to be delayed by 3 and a half weeks. Oh well here tomorrow, so another big day of unpacking and labeling. The above photo has a bucket full of french spools, which are great for displaying your favourite ribbon or thread. The spools below are huge industrial spools which would be amazing candle holders.

Beautiful hand carved marble bowls. The top one is full of little cast iron birds.
Large marble apples; similar to our marble pears.....great for the apple isle of Tasmania.

Today i thought i would do a post on some of my loves. What a great idea putting a tray on top of this cast iron urn; makes for a fabulous side table. Oh the above shot, yes the french portraits on the floor.....still looking....would love to find one somewhere.
Pocket watches are also a great discovery when you stumble across them at a market or in a box at some garage sale. I specifically like the one in the photo above.
A mix of industrial with finer Belgium linen covered chairs; love the rusticity of the floor in the photo above.

With most of the photos i file away, most of them somewhere have a display of beautiful linen. The above photo of white on white has been beautifully accented with linen curtains in the fore ground; this also cleverly ties in with the jute mat on the floor.
This loft bedroom is only made more dreamy with the beautiful linen on the bed.

Yesterday i received these recycled glass table hurricanes; which look equally as good indoors or out. The glass is so thick and they just have a lovely appeal about them. Already they are selling.
These handwoven baskets are also a treat; great for storage of any kind.
These are the mini tea light holders which have a beeswax candle in them; so cute.
The laundry or storage basket in the back ground and the carry utility basket in front. Both very durable and useful. Stay tuned for more stock about to arrive tomorrow.

Exhausted from walking down endless Isles at the gift fair, i feel somewhat satisfied with my purchases and a little excited at the prospect of their arrival. Today i am just sitting in my store dreaming of merchandising all my new purchases. I have brought some gorgeous pottery, similar to the pottery shown in our store in photos below. I have also purchased lots of jewellery and clothing with a distinct french feel. Lots of vintage glass ware, linens, gorgeous cushions, throws and bags. So so pleased to be buying for this store that is not only a part of me, but now a part of you.....thanks for stepping into The Vintage Rose and supporting what i love to do. I have brought hurricanes similar to in the photo above and beautiful hessian ottomans; so comfy. Cant wait to share all this with you.....Amanda

I just love these bottles; i will be looking for bottles like these at the gift fair which i am heading off to this week.

Dress forms, large clocks and large rattan baskets are also loves of mine.
Spice drawers in all shapes and sizes are also another of my weaknesses.....
I will also be on the hunt for cage lighting....i think it is quirky and will work with other bits i have in mind.

I love everything that looks light and fresh even though there are years of wear and tear on some of the pieces of furniture ; like in the photo above. I guess it just softens the edge of things when everything isn't so perfect. I am off to the trade fair once again, and this year i will be particularly on the hunt for some french style cushions, similar to the ones in the photo above. I met in person the lovely Di Smith who has been making french style cushions in the past and is keen to get back into manufacture, especially after seeing the store in the flesh. So stay tuned and you will see some gorgeous cushions made from french linens from the very clever lady.

If it wasn't for the cushions in the above photo, this room would look very plain and somewhat boring. Sometimes the cushions only have to be a shade or two out from everything else to make the impact which is needed.
Once again a fairly neutral canvas with just a few darker key elements.
I love the candlesticks hope i find some similar on my buying trip.
Gorgeous and inviting despite everything being so light in colour.

This morning has been busy in store; which leads me to my problem of getting more stock. Next week books are arriving as they seem to just walk out the door. This week some gorgeous pottery arrived in the soft french grey which is already selling quickly. Also new in are our small dress makers forms which have nearly all sold out; although i will endeavour to get more in as soon as a new shipment arrives. All in all i have been quite happy with how things have been going; and now more than ever, looking for products that are not found at the gift fairs; which i can honestly say is providing to be quite a challenge.

Our bank finally done. Thanks to a few friends and some good advice we finally made a decision on what we wanted on the bank. We put the Hebe plant "Inspirations" which i think once established will look great. Sometimes things take a long time but i guess its better to get it right.

Where have i been.....

Well its Summer time in Aussie land and yes off we went to be beach bums for 2 weeks. We had a mixture of weather. We were flooded in at where we were staying as it poured for 3 days running. Oh well, it wasn't that bad because it gave me an opportunity to have some real lazy days plus get into some card making for the store. I love making them, but it makes a bit of mess so at the beach house was the place to get right into it. The last week the weather was better and we spent days on the beach and in on and around the water. My daughter had a great time with friends and i think we made some great new ones. Fun was had by all of us...so all in all a great break. So tomorrow its straight back into it....what this year brings who knows but The Vintage Rose will keep on keeping on. I will sign off now but i promise i wont leave it so long before i do my next post. This year promises to be an exciting one with a trip to France in August and buying some genuine french antiques for the store as well. Mid Feb i am off to the gift fair in Sydney and am quite looking forward to what may be available....Manda

Where have you been.......

Or should i say where have i been. Well what a journey....i was whisked away early Christmas morning to catch a plane to Byron Bay as a special birthday surprise. The cooler was packed full of prepared Christmas tea, which i may add i knew nothing about. All this was prepared and organized without me knowing a thing....i was blown away. Unfortunately the weather wasn't very kind to us for the entire time we were there; but the fact that my husband had organized all this for me was enough despite whatever the weather was doing. I felt very special and after a very busy and somewhat chaotic year i think we all needed the break.

Amy has taken these photos as i didn't even have time to pack my camera.

For all the customers that may be travelling up north and are thinking of stopping into The Vintage Rose we open on Wednesday the 12Th of January.

Sorry for the lack of posts but i have been a bit busy over the Christmas period.

This is me at 4 oclock this afternoon....oh well good job. Now i am having a few champagnes and am getting a little excited as tomorrow is Christmas, but also, as some of you know, my birthday. And for the first time in 47 years we are celebrating my birthday. I must say i am feeling a little guilty not being with the family but i guess you have to try these things at least once in your life. The thing is i really dont know any difference and love the fact that every year i get to spend my birthday with my family. So a big Merry Christmas to dad and the rest of the family..... i love you all so much....but this year a surprise is in store for my birthday. A big Merry Christmas to all of you out there in blog land and also a big thankyou to all those who log on to my blog for a peek.....take care and drive safetly over the holiday period.

Getting closer and closer. I have decided that people this year are so un enthused about Christmas because there is so much pressure on people....teachers have to finalize everything they have done throughout the year and write reports; builders are so under the pump to get things finished for clients, retailers well who knows, florists have heaps of weddings and flowers being ordered for Christmas functions and last but certainly not least parents have all the running around juggling and end of year things to go to. Stop, yes lets all just stop now and think......what are we doing to ourselves....what is Christmas really about? We all get bogged down in the expectations of what we think we need to be giving people, family and friends when really the answer is quite simple......its time. We need to all take a deep breath and just slow right down and eliminate this chaos out of Christmas. Take time out to get back to the basics...like cooking a cake for someone down the road....going over to your mates and saying lets have a beer and most importantly spending time with our children. Sometimes i am guilty of all these things; trying to juggle a business on my own, run a house hold and spend time with my family. And yes we all get on that merry go round and don't know how to get off. But please at Christmas lets try to spend time with family, friends and remember its not all about presents it way more than that.

And i guess with me surrounded by Christmas in store when i get home....well you can guess, i tend to be a bit over the whole thing. I hate feeling like this but i guess i will get into the spirit of things soon.

Well Santa hasn't quite made it yet; but quite a few trusty little elves have been out in force. In the last few days we have been madly unpacking and resorting stock, my only hope is that i have enough. Already a lot of the small ticket items have gone as people are looking little gifts for friends or teachers, although there are still plenty of soaps and body products that everyone can use.

The string dispensers and scissors are a great gift as too is the gorgeous clock in the background.

Beautiful lamps , cushions and quilts have been popular this year.

The willow t.pees for the garden don't last long....great for growing peas or beans or a lovely clematis on.

A french style smocked dress for that warm summers evening . The store has a little bit of everything.

Christmas is upon us.

These very large 1000gm olive soap...great for all those die cooks that wash their hands every five minutes. They should last for years ....

New rugs for the beach house or home...so easy to put absolutely anywhere.

Christmas Celebrations.....

This is the time of the year when we start decorating our homes and thinking more about entertaining....with friends and or family. Whether we live at opposite sides of the globe; some of us will be warming up besides a lovely open fire whilst others will be outdoors with the barbecue going. Either way its time....

These French cheese boards have been a great hit with entertaining; great for cheeses, breads dried fruit and nuts....whatever takes your fancy.

Don't forget the free wrapping for Christmas gifts in store.

More soaps arriving soon....they also make a great gift to take to someones home for a thank you for having us gift.

Working in the garden....

Over the weekend i did some work out in the garden; some potting, fertilizing and trimming and a basic tidy up. Things are always a lot easier to keep under control if you do a little bit at a time....sometimes i let things get away and regret it down the track when i am up to my knees in weeds.

Next weekend i need to do some more pruning...now the frosts are completely gone its safe to prune my hedges. Happy gardening to all you fellow gardeners.

Yesterday i went to my brothers open garden with a couple of friends, featured in the above photo. It was a beautiful day, very inspiring.......i thought i would share some photos.

It was full of recycled and sustainable ideas amongst a beautiful array of plantings that would more than excite any avid gardener.....so amazing.

Fabrics certainly hold center stage in a lot of homes; some can make the room look pretty ,or maybe even glamorous. The umbrella hanging on the coat rack adds a pretty touch to the room, even a slight English feel.

Over the weekend i have been sewing madly and as promised i am posting some shots of my designs. I have had vintage postcards and photos printed onto cotton and then i have stitched them onto burlap. On the underneath i have used the new French General fabrics which are just beautiful.

These stockings have taken me quite a bit of work. Each one is individual and has a combination of vintage inspired fabric with antique braids and buttons etc.

An overall shot of the stockings . I take my hat off to all you etsy creators; i am afraid running a store and trying to make things is like all too hard. I hope you like my creations.

Loving these cute little frames which sell for only $25 such a great small gift for Christmas or simply a thank you gift for a friend.

Some new linen cushions have arrived this week and already are selling well. Cushions have been great this year.....they can add an element of difference to any room with little fuss or cost.

When you drive up and the sheep follow you up and the dogs start barking.......yes i am home. There is something warming about knowing that you are partially sustainable; growing your own veggies, collecting your own eggs and fattening your own meat. All of this makes for a great lifestyle especially if you can practice near organic methods.

You know sometimes its in your head...i must do a post....people will wonder where i have gone but honestly its making the time that i find hard. The last few weeks in store have been crazy and honestly as quick as i am unpacking stock it is selling. More stock is still on its way, so hopefully i will have enough for Christmas. This weekend i have to hide myself away and get some Christmas Stock made so the following week it will be all out on the floor. I will post you some shots. The crosses in the above shot have been featured in the latest copy of Inside; and yes they are available at The Vintage Rose.

These chair futons are just great...made from burlap and then printed. The vintage wire baskets would be just fine inside or out.

This large wall plaque would look magnificent in any room....bedroom, lounge, hallway, and boy i think it would be quite a statement.

This beautiful mirror has already created quite a stir; its even more beautiful in real life.

Today we had our beautiful french style hand loomed smock dresses arrive; they are even more beautiful than i remember them. The store is getting more full of all sorts of goodies ready for my Christmas trade

I must say people are buying up early this year and thinking more about their gifts. I wont be putting up my decorations until sometime in November. My regulars are use to this and appreciate my logic behind holding things back. I feel Christmas is largely about our children and bringing the decorations out so early only confuses them and they think Santa is on the way when really its still months away. So under protest i wont put mine out till November.

These baskets have been a hit already after only being put out yesterday. Already i have sold 5.....Geoff i hope i can get some more.

The little buckets are delightful and would look fab with bunches of roses in them hanging off a door handle; imagine them at a Wedding how gorgeous would they look.
The little hand carved horse are absolutely delightful.....so french.

Today and yesterday i have been unpacking heaps of stock ready for Christmas trading. I still have heaps coming and yes i am starting to run out of room. Looks like its up in the air from here on in; i think things look great stacked up any way. I will post some more shots soon so you can see whats new. Take care Amanda x

Romance

These photos all spell "Romance"; there is something about each and everyone that just screams romance. And yes you have it, i am a romantic at heart.

There are times in your life, especially as a parent of two daughters, when romance is definitely in the air. It makes you feel happy that you have taught them the importance of feeling special and making sure that their partner cherishes their every move. When you see that, as a parent, you feel very satisfied. This whole process can be somewhat daunting but when you see that glance, that commitment, that unity within two people you know its genuine. At the moment i feel a very lucky mum.

This is Ophelia the first rose in the garden to flower and the last to stop flowering. It was my mothers favourite rose and i could safely say its also one of mine. Here it is rambling all over the barn.

Below are a couple of shots of our entertaining areas; when the sun goes down on one deck we go out to the other and follow the sun . At first the deck in the photo to our right was gravel up to the doors but we were finding it quite messy and gravel was going in the house all the time. So we decided to pave another area with a step down and a retaining wall around it. Gradually we put the hedge around and put pots etc to make the area more homely.

Jugs, jugs and more jugs

I am convinced that most women are jug-a-holics. Most of my customers that come in say oh no more beautiful jugs....and before i say a word they have it in their hot little hands and are carrying it towards the counter. So today i thought i would introduce you to another one...you guessed it me. And yes this is my collection; a mixture of old and new.

I have had a bit of a spring re-arrange as all of us nesty women seem to do . It seems to give things a new lease of life......a few new cushions or a throw maybe even a new print, not to forget a lovely vase full of spring bulbs .

Looking up at our lounge mantle with a minimal look for the moment.

A quite spot to relax after a big day at work or a busy day in the garden.....take care everyone.

For the love of Red.....

I must say if it wasn't for vintage linens with that splash of red i really don't know what i would do; i absolutely love it. I stumbled across these photos the other day in my files and felt that i needed to share them with you. At the moment i have two projects on the go ; preparing a day bed for our back veranda and having 2 chairs covered in burlap with lots of tufting. I will show photos later on......

These cushions with ties inspired me for what i could put on my day bed; i want it to be nice and comfy to lay on after a hot afternoon in the garden.

Love how Cabbages and Roses use splashes of red in their store ; it makes all the creams and neutrals come alive. Take care and have a great weekend; happy gardening.
